Grade 5-8-As a gamekeeper for Reg Harris, whose country estate is used each fall for a series of pheasant shoots, Taylor's father is responsible for ridding the area of "vermin" such as wildcats, foxes, and birds of prey. In 1964, when this story is set, only 24 red kites exist in Great Britain. When a pair of the rare birds is found nesting near their town, Taylor's dad is instructed to eliminate them, even though it is illegal. In a secret egg-collecting scheme gone wrong, one of the three eggs hatches under Taylor's care. He and a friend secretly raise the chick, naming her Teresa, and develop a strong bond with her. However, when the boys attempt to teach her to hunt, she attacks them, and they release her. When she reappears during the fall hunt, Harris shoots her. After discovering that she is still alive, he repeatedly kicks her and then nails her by one foot to the shed. Taylor's father finally stands up to his employer and loses his job, and therefore, his home. The book's pace never flags, making it a riveting reading experience. Other than the overdrawn, singularly evil Mr. Harris, the characters are well developed and ably present the complex struggle of livelihood vs. animal survival. However, many unsatisfying loose ends remain at the conclusion: how Taylor's family will exist; what will happen to Teresa, who survives her injuries but will never again fly; and what punishment Mr. Harris will receive. Burgess uses an omniscient, somewhat anthropomorphic voice as he narrates Teresa's struggles, which serves to magnify readers' attachment to her. Therefore, the graphic nature of the abuse against her, which may upset many readers, should be of paramount concern to adults introducing children to this book.
